Journey to Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun; friends and I visit five magnificent cities in Japan—Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka—and explore its local culture and beautiful sceneries.
You may have noticed that this personal website features plenty of videos—from well-crafted interviews to to raw footage.
Why videos? They're my go-to way of self-expression! I've made all kinds of videos showcasing my life, including musically timed montages and vlog commentaries. Combining my passion for teaching others with the joy in video editing, I've also filmed a series explaining important linguistics concepts.

When Christmas break is around the corner, my friends and I prepare for the ultimate group activity—an all-nighter for board games!
I'm a diehard board-game lover. I've delved into all kinds of games: Monopoly, Clue, Poker, Mahjong, Avalon, all sorts of card games, etc.
My favorite game is Werewolf. It's a social deduction game between an informed minority and an uninformed majority—4 colluding wolves versus 8 innocent civilians. It's a little different from the typical American version of Mafia; this version has more roles, more abilities, and more complexity. Check the complete rules here.
My favorite role is, of course, a tricky, cunning wolf. By night, my secret hand signs fly across the room, conveying tactics to fellow wolves (which they half the time don’t understand). By day, I masquerade as a seer, luring innocent players to my side. Cue the evil laughter.
I love every part of this game. It’s a clash of logic, a slew of deduction, a flurry of misdirects, a crash course in storytelling, a builder of friendships, all accompanied by debate, laughter, and Hot Cheetos.
Party games allow me to more deeply understand my friends, their playing styles, thought processes, personalities. In playing, I make bonds, share laughs, and maybe outsmart a friend or two.
Friends and I dive into a round of Clue, where we race to find the culprit, the location, and the murder weapon behind Mr. Boddy's mysterious death.
We play a round of Guandan, a card shedding game popular in China.
Having fun in the living room roleplaying the Knights of the Round Table, in a round of the social deduction game, Avalon.
A match of mahjong between my grandmother (left), my brother (center left), me (center right), and my mother (right). A game across generations!

Speaking of board games, I also love playing chess!
The thinking and planning aspect is what attracts me to chess. You can play for strategy in slow-paced chess over a warm cup of tea, or you can play for speed in 1-minute bullet matches. Either way, the adrenaline rushes in.
Additionally, I've explored all kinds of chess variants across the globe: Xiangqi (Chinese chess), Shogi (Japanese chess), Makruk (Thai chess), and Janggi (Korean chess). I'm also a big fan of 4-player chess, atomic chess, duck chess, Gomoku (5-in-a-row), Go (surrounding checkers), and Reversi (conversion checkers, aka Othello); I grew up playing the latter 3.
My favorite chess player is Magnus Carlsen, a Norwegian grandmaster. He's also what got me interested in the Scandinavian languages!

I may not be the most athletic person, but when it comes to sports, by far my favorite sport is skiing. Up in the mountains with steep slopes and ethereal scenery, the delight in rushing down a Black Diamond is akin to the goosebumps of riding a roller coaster.
The activity itself is seasonal, and I rarely get any chances to ski—maybe once or twice a year. But perhaps that's why I enjoy skiing so much; the scarcity of such an opportunity is what gives me thrill. (I've also tried snowboarding, but failed miserably.)
This Christmas break, you know I'm gonna be with my poles and goggles, down the slopes and at it again.

A photo with my piano teacher, under whom I've studied for 8 years.
I greatly enjoy classical music! Having played the piano for 9 years, I have received the National Guild High School Diploma for Social Music as well as a 3-times Advanced Level Certificate of Merit for repertoire, music theory, and sightreading issued by the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC). My favorite pieces I've played include Chopin's Revolutionary Etude (Op. 10 No. 12), Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor, and Chopin's Scherzo No. 1—but my number one piece is a comtemporary piece entitled "Summer" by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi. It's a cute little piece, from the 1999 Japanese film Kikujiro.
