Every Sunday, residents of Brookdale Senior Living can hear the whisper and thunder of the grand piano, from the tension in Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor to the storytelling of Chopin's Scherzo No. 1. Or, they may walk into the playful cacophony of a Chinese flute, savor the quiet strumming of a guitar, or relish the ache and bloom of a solo vocalist's rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria.
That is my goal in directing and expanding Musicians of the Hearth—a warm name that may inspire people to cherish music together. Whether it is for the elderly who can sit down and relax to soothing music pieces, or performers who take one step at a time in conquering their stage fright, our student performance group hopes to create lasting memories for all.
We've come a long way. At 120+ volunteers and multiple city-wide branches, we're still looking for more performers! Want to participate? https://musiciansofthehearth.wixsite.com/moth
Traveling to local grocers and stores to ask for Leland Bridge sponsorships—we reached 25+ businesses!
Leland Bridge, short for Leland Bridge Parents Group, is a parent-teacher association dedicated towards raising funds to school programs such as Speech and Debate and 604 Robotics, incoming students with orientations and information sessions.
As the organization's Student Editor-in-Chief, I've published 5 articles on behalf of Leland Bridge, volunteered at public fundraising events, and spoke at student seminars hosted to give incoming students more information about high school life and culture.
I especially enjoyed recording interviews and speaking with some of the students—check this one out here!

Performing the Chinese red-tasseled spear!
Every year when February rolls by, volunteers and performers prepare eagerly for one of the school's most anticipated events—Leland Bridge Night, a multitude of performances to entertain the audience, celebrate Lunar New Year and Chinese culture, and, most importantly, raise funds for school supplies and programs.
Eager to perform martial arts in front of an audience, I signed up for the 2023 Kungfu performance. Doing acrobatics in front of teachers, the principal, and even San Jose's mayor Matt Mahan, I was thrilled. The next year, I helped organize 2024's Leland Bridge performance, inviting members from my Kungfu studio to practice their forms and rehearse for the annual event.
Participating in Leland Bridge Night is just plain fun. Other performances I've attended include a singing show, a hip-hop dance performance, as well as the final dance for all volunteers. I also dressed up as a Caishen, god of wealth in Chinese mythology!
This year, I'll be returning to the delight of performing on stage, so be thrilled!
